Biljana Lazarevic, Chief Inspector and Commander of the Serbian Ministry of the Interior’s contingent taking part in the work of the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti, yesterday briefed Minister Dacic about the situation in Haiti and the activities of the Serbian team.

Lazarevic stressed that the Serbian police officers are well and are engaged in rescue missions, adding that they will remain in Haiti because it is their task to help the population at all times, especially in a difficult moment like this.

She said that the Serbian police officers are accommodated in the UN logistics base, where the command centre is currently situated because the UN Mission building collapsed in the earthquake.

Officers Bozidar Janjic and Slobodan Obrenovic have joined other members of the Serbian unit in Port-au-Prince, after helping with the injured at the local hospital in Saint-Marc last night.

Lazarevic said that Minister Dacic has asked to be regularly informed about the activities of the Serbian contingent and has offered help and support.

She added that members of the Serbian police are in the UN logistics base currently housing the Command Center, given that the building of the UN Mission was completely destroyed in the earthquake.

Members of the Serbian Ministry of Interior, participating in the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti, are well and involved in the rescue operation and assisting the population after the catastrophic earthquake in that country – it was communicated in Belgrade after the meeting of the officials of Serbian contingent of peacekeepers with Minister of Interior Ivica Dacic.

At yesterday's session, the Serbian Government decided to send humanitarian aid to Haiti after the devastating earthquake that hit the Caribbean country.

The Government has also expressed its solidarity with the people of Haiti.
